Prothom Alo news information is wrong: Chief Adviser’s press wing
The press wing of the interim government’s chief adviser said that a news item published in Prothom Alo, one of the country’s leading national daily newspapers, contained incorrect information. It has been reported that the information published in the news has not been fact checked.
This information was reported on Tuesday (November 5) on the verified Facebook page of the Press Wing of the Chief AdviserIt said that one of the leading newspapers in Bangladesh, Dainik Prothom Alo, published a story on its front page on November 2, which claimed that there was a sharp increase in murders, robberies and robberies in Dhaka during September and October.
The newspaper claimed that 192 people were killed in Dhaka in two months and at least 21 of them were killed in Mohammadpur and its surrounding areas.
Claiming that the news published in Dainik Prothom Alo is not true, the press wing says it is flawed and the facts of the report have not been fact-checked properly, which is very dangerous. The report suggests that crime levels in Dhaka rose sharply in the immediate aftermath of the student-led mass uprisings in July and August.
The message also said that Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that the death toll in the capital during this period was 68 (not 192) and 10 people were killed in Mohammadpur (not 21).
The DMP explained in a protest letter to Prothom Alo that the cause of three times the death toll claimed in the newspaper’s news was mainly because the families of many of those killed in July-August filed murder cases in September and October. The killings took place during the mass uprising, but were recorded by the police in September and October.
Prothom Alo published the protest sent by DMP. However, despite the DMP’s clear explanation, the newspaper did not correct its report, which created a false impression of the law and order situation in the capital.
The government expects Prothom Alo to update its report online in line with the DMP’s interpretation as a responsible newspaper.
The press wing reported that the interim government and police authorities have taken various steps to bring relief to public life by restoring the broken law and order system after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.
The work of increasing the morale of the policemen and restructuring the institution is going on, along with increasing the capacity of the police. We are committed to maintaining normal law and order situation in the entire country including the capital
