Matia Chowdhury, the firewoman of Bengal, is no more

Begum Matia Chowdhury, a member of the presidium of Awami League and former Member of Parliament of Sherpur-2 Constituency, passed away. He died today afternoon while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital.

Evercare Hospital General Manager Arif Mahmood confirmed this information.

A family member said that Matia Chowdhury was under treatment in the hospital for a long time. Sometimes he was brought home. But due to physical complications, he was again admitted to Ever Care Hospital. He died this afternoon.

Former minister and Awami League presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury will be buried tomorrow Thursday at Shahid Intellectual Cemetery. Earlier, his funeral will be held at Gulshan Azad Masjid tomorrow after Zohar.

The late Matia Chowdhury’s brother Masudul Islam Chowdhury confirmed all this information and told the media that a new place has been requested from the City Corporation for the Intellectual Cemetery. If there is space, she will be buried there, if not, she will be buried in the grave of her husband Bazlur Rahman. Despite the demands of the people of the area, considering the current situation of the country, Matia Chowdhury will not be taken to his constituency.

Matia was born on June 30, 1942 in Pirojpur district. Father Mohiuddin Ahmed Chowdhury was a police officer and mother Nurjahan Begum was a housewife. In personal life, on June 18, 1964, she got married to the famous journalist Bazlur Rahman.

While studying at Eden College, he became involved in student politics. In 1965, he was elected as the president of Bangladesh Students Union. In 1967, Matia, popularly known as ‘Agnikanya’, joined the East Pakistan National Awami Party and became a member of its executive committee. Between 1970 and 1971, he was an active participant in Bangladesh’s freedom struggle, campaigning, lobbying and nursing the wounded.

In 1971, he became the organizing secretary of Awami League. He was arrested several times during the period of President Ziaur Rahman and President Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

In 1996, 2009 and 2013, he served as the Minister of Agriculture during the Awami League regime. On January 12, 2023, he took charge as the Deputy Leader of the National Parliament.

Later, when he was elected in the twelfth parliamentary election, he again took charge as the deputy leader of the National Assembly. Sheikh Hasina left the country and fled to India in the face of the mass movement on August 5. Later, when President Mohammad Sahabuddin dissolved the National Parliament, he lost his position as a Member of Parliament. He was a former Member of Parliament from Sherpur-2 Constituency.

বাংলার অগ্নিকন্যা মতিয়া চৌধুরী আর নেই

আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতিমণ্ডলীর সদস্য ও শেরপুর-২ আসনের সাবেক সংসদ সদস্য বেগম মতিয়া চৌধুরী মারা গেছেন। আজ দুপুরে রাজধানীর এভারকেয়ার হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় তার মৃত্যু হয়।

এভারকেয়ার হাসপাতালের জেনারেল ম্যানেজার আরিফ মাহমুদ এ তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন।

পরিবারের এক সদস্য জানিয়েছেন, মতিয়া চৌধুরী দীর্ঘদিন হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন ছিলেন। মাঝে তাকে বাসায় আনা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু শারীরিক জটিলতা দেখা দেওয়ায় আবার এভার কেয়ার হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়। আজ দুপুরে তিনি মারা গেছেন।

সাবেক মন্ত্রী ও আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতিমণ্ডলীর সদস্য বেগম মতিয়া চৌধুরীকে আগামীকাল বৃহস্পতিবার শহিদ বুদ্ধিজীবী কবরস্থানে দাফন করা হবে। এর আগে কাল বাদ জোহর গুলশান আজাদ মসজিদে তার জানাজা অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।

প্রয়াত মতিয়া চৌধুরীর ভাই মাসুদুল ইসলাম চৌধুরী এ সব তথ্য নিশ্চিত করে সংবাদমাধ্যমকে বলেন, বুদ্ধিজীবী কবরস্থানে নতুন জায়গা চাওয়া হয়েছে সিটি করপোরেশনের কাছে। জায়গা পেলে সেখানে দাফন করা হবে, না পেলে তার স্বামী বজলুর রহমানের কবরে দাফন হবে। এলাকার মানুষের দাবি থাকলেও দেশের বর্তমান পরিস্থিতি বিবেচনায় মতিয়া চৌধুরীকে নিজের নির্বাচনী এলাকায় নেওয়া হবে না।

১৯৪২ সালের ৩০ জুন মতিয়া পিরোজপুর জেলায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। পিতা মহিউদ্দিন আহমেদ চৌধুরী ছিলেন পুলিশ কর্মকর্তা এবং মা নুরজাহান বেগম ছিলেন গৃহিণী। ব্যক্তিজীবনে ১৯৬৪ সালের ১৮ জুন খ্যাতিমান সাংবাদিক বজলুর রহমানের সাথে বিবাহ বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হন।

ইডেন কলেজে অধ্যয়নরত অবস্থায় ছাত্র রাজনীতিতে জড়িয়ে পড়েন। ১৯৬৫ সালে বাংলাদেশ ছাত্র ইউনিয়ন এর সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হন। ১৯৬৭ সালে ‘অগ্নিকন্যা’ নামে পরিচিত মতিয়া পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ন্যাশনাল আওয়ামী পার্টিতে যোগ দেন এবং এর কার্যকরী কমিটির সদস্য হন। ১৯৭০ ও ১৯৭১ এর মাঝামাঝি সময়ে তিনি বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রাম, প্রচারণা, তদবির এবং আহতদের শুশ্রুষায় সক্রিয় অংশগ্রহণকারী ছিলেন।

১৯৭১ সালে তিনি আওয়ামী লীগের সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক হয়েছিলেন। রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমান ও রাষ্ট্রপতি হুসেইন মুহাম্মদ এরশাদের সময়কালে তিনি বেশ কয়েকবার গ্রেপ্তার হন।

১৯৯৬ ও ২০০৯ এবং ২০১৩ সালে আওয়ামী লীগ শাসনামলে কৃষিমন্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ১২ জানুয়ারি ২০২৩ সালে তিনি জাতীয় সংসদের সংসদ উপনেতা হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নেন।

পরে তিনি দ্বাদশ সংসদ নির্বাচনে নির্বাচিত হলে পুনরায় তিনি জাতীয় সংসদের সংসদ উপনেতা হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নেন। গণ আন্দোলনের মুখে গত ৫ আগস্ট দেশ ছেড়ে ভারতে পালিয়ে যান শেখ হাসিনা। পরে রাষ্ট্রপতি মোহাম্মদ সাহাবুদ্দিন জাতীয় সংসদ বিলুপ্ত করলে তিনি সংসদ সদস্য পদ হারান। তিনি শেরপুর-২ আসনের সাবেক সংসদ সদস্য ছিলেন।
